While the simple fact that The Sims Social is finally coming to Facebook is enough to send players like myself into a virtual tizzy (ok, maybe a real world tizzy too), try this bit of news on for size: If you become one of the thousands of players that "Like" the Sims Social official Facebook fan page, you'll help all players (including yourself, of course) unlock some exclusive freebies in the game at launch.

So we were surprised when Rivet Games, formerly known as FooMojo, announced a pet game as its first Facebook offering after closing a $5 million round of series B funding.

And that's exactly what appears to be the basis for Empires & Allies: city building, farming and resource management with a heavy dose of gun power. Sound appealing to you? Then check our full preview right here and click on the link below to join the battle.

When it comes to form, Facebook games sure have come a long way since Mafia Wars, but function is another story. JollyWood, Tecmo Koei's first serious outing on the platform, is a prime example of just that. Tecmo Singapore has crafted one fine-looking social game, animated introductions and all, but you'll see that JollyWood is just like the rest after even a few minutes of play. This isn't to say the game is poorly-made, we've just seen it far too many times before. (And unfortunately, we'll likely see it again.)
A Mystical Land is a 3-D massively-multiplayer online role-playing game playable on Facebook as well as through the game's website. "Let's Play with Gaga" is the slogan for Zynga's new section in RewardVille (their user rewards program), and it's officially launched this evening. For each of RewardVille's supported games (which include all the big names like FarmVille, FrontierVille and CityVille), you'll be able to use your zCoins to "purchase" one exclusive item (with the exception of Vampire Wars, which received two). To be especially clear, while GagaVille may be the main attraction in FarmVille, these items aren't specific to the farming game.

Crime does pay when you're on Facebook, where the genre is one of the most established settings for a social game. We've had the godfather of them all, David Maestri's Mob Wars, followed by Zynga's Mafia Wars. Later on, heavyweights like Ubisoft drops in with CSI: Crime City, Sony brings us James Patterson's Catch a Killer, while THQ lets loose Saints Row®: Total Control. Each new entrant is loaded with flaws, but pushes the envelope a bit in mechanics and design, moving farther away from the tried-and-true, spreadsheet clicks-and-waits, towards something that increasingly resembles Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto.
Eastpak's 'SPAK', a human tetris Facebook advergame that has backpackers jumping off a tall building and being sucked into jet turbines, is all part of the company's efforts in promoting an edgy and tough image for their backpacks, which are branded as "Built to Resist." And thanks to a great creative team, who managed to take a gory and morbid concept and spin it into something fun, the game doesn't fail to be engaging, work-safe, and made of complete and utter weird.
Alex Trebek is quite the busy man these days. First, he kept his contestants from lunging at Watson--that IBM supercomputer that defeated two Jeopardy! legends in February--in jealous rage of its immense computing ability and now, he's on Facebook. (Alright, that first part never happened, but they thought about it!) GSN Digital, the team responsible for Wheel of Fortune on the platform, has launched Jeopardy for Facebook. It's available for play now, and has been modified to cater to the short-burst gameplay most social gamers have time for during their lunch break.

Ever wait to watch a basketball game until the final quarter, because that's when all the best plays happen? Apparently, so does Playdom, who kept that little secret in mind when developing NBA Dynasty for Facebook. The Disney-owned studio got its mitts on the NBA license and went to town with it, creating one impressive basketball game that throws you into three roles: owner, general manager and coach of a hodgepodge NBA team with the best players from the '40s to present day.
Starting today, you can't buy or use Playfish Cash (PFC) any more. Due to a major deal Playfish signed last fall with Facebook, Playfish (as well as other social games companies) must switch its in-game premium currency to Facebook Credits by July 1st. Players who still have PFC will have to convert theirs into game-specific currency by June 30th. So if you play more than one Playfish game, now's the time to decide which one(s) you love the most.

http://images.bbgsite.com/www/socialgames/flash/april18_432x200.jpgAngry Birds Rio isn't the only game to celebrate the upcoming release of the Dreamworks animated film Rio. FarmVille is also getting in on the action with a brand new farm.
A mid-morning tweet from Playdom directed us to a new Playdom.com games portal where two of its games are playable without the use of Facebook, MySpace, or other platforms. As with Zynga's FarmVille.com, Playdom appears to be experimenting with running games in an environment that it controls — without the requirements that come with the Facebook platform, such as using Credits as the exclusive paid currency in games.
According to Metal International founder and president Ken Rutkowski, social games will boost Facebook Credit sales and account holdings more than anything else on the platform, TechWorld reports. But that's not all, Rutkowski believes that thanks to social games, Facebook and its Credits platform could become the largest bank in the world by 2015. If you use the term loosely, he might have a point, but Rutkowski is completely serious. "Facebook will be the largest bank by 2015," Rutkowski said. "I hear you say 'how can they be a bank' what's going on?"

Well, that does about sum up the social and mobile gaming scenes of 2010. Well, at least in the "Insanely Popular and We Can't Explain Why" category. Alright, so the 15th Annual Webby Awards doesn't include that category in particular, but Gamasutra reports that Zynga and Rovio have been nominated for Webby Awards for FarmVille, CityVille and Angry Birds, respectively. Oddly enough, FarmVille joins Angry Birds in earning a nomination for Best Mobile Device Game. (Have they played FarmVille on iPhone?)
One of the design goals of Dragon Age Legends is to have meaningful social mechanics. Many social game are social only in the sense that they use the player's social graph to help spread the game virally through her network - by encouraging the player to invite her friends as neighbors to grow her farm, for example, or trading items with one another through the gifting system to finish a building. While these mechanics help grow a social game's visibility, they don't necessarily make the actual experience of playing the game more fun.
Today, Tiny Speck is thrilled to announce that wlitch will be starting beta next week. If you already have access to the alpha tests, you'll notice much more frequent testing (along, of course, with more new features, content and increased polish). If you don't already have access to the tests, you'll notice that you'll be much more likely to get an invite: though there are still tens of thousands of people in the queue, we'll be inviting many more and switching to a system where existing testers can invite their friends.
The man behind Street Fighter 4 3D Edition for the Nintendo 3DS sees Facebook as the future home of fighting games, Siliconera reports. Finally, Facebook users can duke it out in a game rather than publicly through News Feeds. After a CVG reporter mentioned the lack of fighting games on Facebook to Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono, he replied, "I can't say much but I will say there will be. I can't say why - but I do think there will be." In other words, Ono knows something we don't.
